Scan PA Digitizing Project

The Scan PA Project is a statewide program whose goals are to remove barriers to digitizing local information and to extend digitizing services to material owned by the public. Schuylkill County residents can attend one of the Open Scan Days or make an appointment with the Reference Department to bring their photos, negatives, slides, or VCR home movies to be converted to a digital file format. This service is free but participants must provide a suitable flash drive or external hard drive for files to be stored.

In addition, documents and photos pertaining to Schuylkill County local history can be brought to the Library to be scanned and preserved on the POWER Library: PA Photos and Documents website. (Click Here To View) PA Photos and Documents is a state digital collection focused on historic, cultural, and other collections of interest to the citizens of Pennsylvania. Internet Archive Digitization Project

The Pottsville Free Public Library borrowed a ScribeStation from the State Library of Pennsylvania to digitize fragile books in the local history collection. These titles have been made available free for public use on the Internet Archive (Click Here To View). Some materials have been added in partnership with local organizations, including the Pottsville Republican-Herald office and the Pottsville Area High School Library. Organizations in Schuylkill County who are looking for free ways to digitally preserve their books or photos are encouraged to contact the Reference Librarian at potref@pottsvillelibrary.org or at 570-622-8880 x11.
