Two important topics are featured in the month of February: Black History and National Heart Health, although you don’t have to limit yourself to learning more about both to just this month. Learning more about both topics will benefit both you and your community!
For Black History Month, NewsBank has collected a number of newspaper stories on the subject that you can access in their “Black History Special Report“. These people and events are part of everyone’s history, not just one group. You can also find great resources at the Pottsville Library: reference books with biographies and shorter histories are on display in the Reference Department; books on CD by Black authors are on display near the public computers; and eBooks available from the Infobase, Salem Press, and Axis360 collections.
For National Heart Health Month, learn simple and long term things you can do to keep your heart healthy! NewsBank has a few stories to get you started, or find out more about cardiovascular diseases from Omnigraphics EBooks. Use the Pottsville Library catalog to find books about how to cope with stress and anger, cook healthier foods, and learn other ways to improve your heart’s health.
And join us on February 23 for the annual Read-In Chain at the Pottsville Library, in partnership with the MLK Family Enrichment Center of Schuylkill County. Readers of all ages will be sharing books written by African American authors and featuring African American stories.
